In April 2019, some of the SWIS team members participated in the Discovery Education Learning Experience, in partnership with Saanich (SD63) School District. We were invited by Ms. Monica Braniff to join them for an interactive professional learning experience.
The event is not only a learning experience but also an opportunity for the SWIS team to connect and network with the teachers and executive staff in Saanich School Districts. Before the workshop started, we had a chance to meet and interact with Mr. Dave Eberwein, Superintendent of Schools, New Assistant Superintendent – Mr. Paul McKenzie, and Ms. Carly Hunter, Director of Instruction. We had a lovely conversation about the SWIS program as a partnership and as strong support to the school districts.
Together, we explored and learned how Discovery Education supports the BC curriculum and innovative instructional practices. SWIS workers had a trial to explore Discovery education further. I felt the most valuable part was the opportunity to have discussions with teachers. SWIS workers received information and ideas to help new immigrant students and parents in understanding the different teaching options teachers use and the learning resources for students. SD63 district staff will invite SWIS workers to attend other educational trainings in the future.
On April 16, SWIS workers also joined the Saanich Schools District Multicultural Potluck, an annual ELL Parent Gatherings at North Saanich Middle in Sidney. SWIS workers had a display table to promote ICA programs and services at the event. Many families and school staff visited our table.
At the event, the gym walls were decorated with inspiring, colourful posters created by the ELL students about their own dreams, their dreams for our community, and their dreams for the world. Many new immigrant families, as well as school executives and staff from Saanich School Districts took time to look at them.
SWIS workers Julia Zhou and Lisa Wang attended the event and made important connections with clients and some SD63 district and school staff. We are looking forward to more collaborations with the school districts to share information and host educational sessions for our clients in the future.
