Dear Friend of ICA,

Almost one year ago, the first Syrian refugees were resettled in Victoria. With your help, since December 2015, ICA has resettled over 380 refugees to our community.

As the year comes to a close, newcomers feel grateful to Victorian residents for their kindness but also feel added pressures. For both privately sponsored refugees and government-assisted refugees the financial support they have received for the last year, will soon come to an end. For most, this means securing employment or accessing social assistance. While research shows refugees contribute greatly to the economy over the long term, we also know for some the first few years are very difficult.

Fadiyah age 44 is one of the 380 newcomers that have been resettled to Victoria. Having lost her husband in conflict, she is a single mother of three children. Fadiyah is a teacher and desperately wants to secure work here, however she knows her limited English makes it nearly impossible to secure any teaching job in the near future.

24518410495_3b53314868_kThe road ahead is long for Fadiyah. She reflects on her situation and in Arabic says “I’ve been waiting many years to rebuild my life, a few more is okay.” Her dedication to her children keeps her goals in focus. Fadiyah tells me that it is because of the support of other woman she has met through programs at ICA, which keeps her going.

I am asking for your help to continue to make these non-government funded programs available, which Fadiyah and other newcomers rely on. Strong social supports in challenging times makes it possible for refugees to envision and create life beyond the hardships they know all too well. We know women like Fadiyah work hard to contribute back to our community.

During a time of giving, please join me in donating to support programming for refugee integration in our community. The services that ICA provides creating lasting impact on newcomer’s lives and your support helps us to deliver these services. Please consider a gift of $500, $250, $100, $50, $25, or any donation of your choice.

Let’s celebrate all we are grateful for at this festive time of year. It is through the generousity and kindness of people like you that make our community the vibrant place that welcomes newcomers.
