ICA Youth Services has been bursting at the seams! Moving into the fall our momentum is going strong! We said goodbye to 2 lovely summer students, Melody Wise and Zhiqi Zhang, and have welcomed three practicum students from the University of Victoria: Keri, Kristin and Becki. We have also welcomed Ekta Kudale to the team as our Youth Services Facilitator.
In the last three weeks of August, we hosted a Culture and Confidence through Conversation (CCC) project that taught language and academic curriculum to over 30 newcomer children and youth. This project was funded by the Canadian Red Cross. Lesson plans included building morning routines, days of the week, months of the year, emotions and feelings (naming and recognizing), basic number recognition, family diversity, social and civic rights and responsibilities, basic geography, and local culture. Many thanks to our volunteers who helped make this project possible.
Our fall programs include our Youth Employability Training (YET) program on Tuesdays from 4 – 6 pm. YET provides newcomer youth with support and skills related to finding employment, such as resume building and interview tips and techniques.
We are also excited to announce a new program called Connecting Hearts Through Arts that will run on Thursdays from 4 – 7 pm. Connecting Hearts Through Arts is a girls only program which will empower young girls and provide them opportunities to express their creative sides and create supportive relationships.
