Workshops are the public creative foundation for Luminara. This year we have numerous workshops throughout September in various neighbourhoods and workshop volunteers play a very important part in creating the festival. This is great training for team leaders and anyone interested in leading workshops.
If you have a vision of a lantern display, and are willing to commit the time and creative energy to make it, please contact us and let us know what your ideas are. There are many ways to participate with a lantern installation in your neighbourhood this year, and we will help you find the way that works best for you.
Become a living, moving, breathing work of art at one or more of the various events in different neighbourhoods . Performance experience is not necessary, but enthusiasm is! Open studios will be available to help develop ideas into reality. Please sign up by September 1.
For people who like creative hands-on work. These volunteers work with our Visual Arts team to help create elements that are needed for the event, including repairing or decorating lanterns, accessorizing costumes, making banners, signs, and taking part in many other fun, creative activities.
Help us get the word out in your neighbourhood, postering, taking flyers out and talking to people on the street. The best advertising is word of mouth!
These volunteers help set up lantern installations and anything else that needs doing on event days. For anyone who is handy, resourceful and likes to put things together.
Help with keeping processions safe and fun, making sure people stay on sidewalks and obey traffic signals.
For those who are willing to help put things back in place and tidy up after the festivities, leaving the neighbourhood the way we found it. We honour and respect the strike crew!
Keeping lanterns lit and making certain there are no fires are the focus of this volunteer job. This crew lights many of the installations at dusk, makes sure that they stay lit, and carries lighters and extra candles to help the public with their lanterns. The other component of this job is fire safety, an essential job at Luminara. This team is responsible for ensuring that fires are prevented and/or contained following light-up. Set up of Fire Safety stations and some training with fire safety equipment are part of this volunteer position.
Talent for photography or videography? Bring your own camera equipment and take pictures of lantern installations, costumes, set-up/tear-down, volunteers in action, performances, workshops, and anything eye-catching during the week. Some of your photos may be used in marketing material for future Luminaras!
Cleaning, sorting, labeling boxes, checking costumes for repairs and cleanliness, packing up supplies and cleaning the space. Help us create order from post-festival chaos! More fun than it sounds.
For people who just want to help... putting up posters, finding materials, helping in the office, scrounging for cool junk, moving stuff on and off of trucks, fixing broken lanterns... who knows what might come up?
