Volunteering

We value volunteering as an opportunity to welcome newcomers and build a respectful and inclusive community.

Our volunteer positions provide individuals with the opportunity to engage in cross-cultural interaction, gain valuable skills, and make a positive difference in the Greater Victoria community.

ICA offers services for newcomers, including English classes, settlement and integration counseling, mentoring and peer support, as well as community outreach and education. We could not provide the services that we do without the enormous commitment of our outstanding volunteers.

ICA Volunteer Positions

Career Mentor
Mentoring Services connects skilled immigrants with qualified local mentors to help guide newcomers along their career development path. Mentors assist immigrant professionals to explore the local labour market, the “unspoken rules” of the Canadian workforce, and other career development topics in a safe environment. Childminding
Help ICA childminders supervise daycare activities for preschool children aged 6 months to 5 years. View full position description here.

Conversation Buddy
Meet with an ESL learner for three months of weekly conversation in a classroom setting. View full position description here.

ELSA Teacher's Assistant
Assist teachers with classroom activities and work with ESL learners in a classroom or small-group setting. Learn more about English classes. View full position description here.

ELSA Assistant
Assist teachers with class materials preparation such as photocopying and laminating. View full position description here.

Income Tax Volunteer
Assist low-income ICA clients to fill out income tax forms and answer their income tax questions. Learn more about the Community Volunteer Tax Program. View full position description here.

Library Assistant
Maintain an inventory of ESL library materials and assist with general upkeep and organization of books and resources. View full position description here.

Office Assistant
Assist with general office tasks such as typing, photocopying, faxing, filing, and data entry. View full position description here.

Pen Pal
Exchange letters with an ESL learner over a period of 3 months before meeting in person. View full position description here.

Photographer
Take photographs at ICA special events. View full position description here.

Settlement Volunteer
Help ICA clients fill out forms and write letters, while also assisting settlement staff with clerical and research tasks. Learn more about the Settlement Program. View full position description here.

Telephone Pal
Volunteers are matched with an ESL learner for three months of weekly telephone conversation. View full position description here.

Volunteer Receptionist
Volunteers provide assistance in the front reception area, including: answering a 6-line phone system, taking messages, greeting walk-in visitors, providing information regarding ICA programs and services, and referring clients to appropriate ICA staff. View full position description here.

Youth Peer Tutor
Volunteers between the ages of 14 and 22 assist newcomer youth with their homework in a range of subjects and participate in social activities. View full position description here.

Youth Volunteer - LEAP Program
Provide guidance and support to newcomer youth ages 15 to 20. Assist with career development, education planning and leadership skills. Learn more about the Youth LEAP Program.
