FAQS

Can I participate in this study if I am not a Canadian citizen, or have lived here only a short time?

Yes, as long as you are of Chinese descent, you are eligible to participate in this study, regardless of whether you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, refugee or you hold a temporary working or student visa.

Can I participate in this study if my legal issue was with someone abroad (foreign government, business, or individual)?

No, the legal issue you experienced must be relevant to the Canadian context and governed by Canadian laws, policies or regulations. If you are not sure that is the case for you, please ask us! Send an email to fverhage@icavictoria.org

Can I participate in this study if the issue is ongoing?

Yes, you can participate if the problem is ongoing and has not been resolved. We will ask you questions about how you are trying/hoping to resolve it.

Can I participate in this study if the issue has been resolved?

Yes, you can participate if the problem has been resolved. We will ask you questions about how it was resolved and whether this was helpful to you.

Can I participate if I did not use legal representation to resolve the issue, or if I did not try to resolve it at all?

Yes, you can participate if you never used legal representation and even if you never did anything to resolve the issue. We will ask you questions about what effect this problem has had (or has) on your life and what made it difficult to try to resolve it.

Can I participate in this study if I do not live in Greater Victoria or Greater Vancouver?

Possibly, we might consider including you if you live elsewhere in BC. Please let us know. Unfortunately, we cannot include you if you do not live in BC.

Will you provide interpreters for people who do not speak fluent English?

Yes, you do not have to be fluent in English to participate. You can request an interpreter. Please let us know which language you prefer!

How long will the interview be?

Interviews will be approximately 1.5 hours, including time for informed consent, the interview, completion of the demographic form, and debriefing.

How much will I be paid, and when and how will I receive an honorarium?

Participants will be paid 100 CAD for their time. You will receive this in the form of a cheque sent to your home address.
