CPN Member Profile: CFUV 101.9FM Community Radio

  • October 7, 2020
  • Community Partnership Network

Radio for a Diverse and Growing Community

CFUV 101.9FM is a community radio station operating on the campus of the University of Victoria and is the newest member of the CPN. CFUV offers listeners an eclectic blend of on-air programming and podcasts that offer jazz, opera, news, spoken word, women’s, Indigenous and LGBTQ programming and more. For over 30 years, CFUV has been committed to providing opportunities for diverse voices to be heard in Greater Victoria and beyond.
CFUV’s mission is to amplify and empower under-represented communities to ensure they are heard in the Canadian media landscape. The station’s small group of paid staff provide learning and training opportunities to the more than 150 volunteers who collectively curate and produce CFUV’s programs and podcasts. CFUV values the importance of providing communities a space in which to promote and celebrate our region’s unique cultures. This includes weekly programs in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Finnish, Korean, Polish, Punjabi, and Hindi. This fall CFUV hired two practicum-student journalists from the Middle East and African-Caribbean communities to highlight and develop content from those communities.
In addition to volunteer-produced content, CFUV works with diverse communities to create content. Over the past 3 years, podcasts have been created by and for Black, Indigenous and Persons of Colour (BIPOC) communities through the CFUV Speaks podcasting project. CFUV also operates a free on-air Public Service Announcement (PSA) platform, so community organizations can promote what they do and the value they bring to our community.
CFUV’s Station Manager Glen Swarnadhipathu spoke of the value of the CPN:
“CFUV is glad to be part of the ICA’s Community Partnership Network. We believe it’s our responsibility as a media and arts organization to proactively support and connect with diverse newcomer communities and ICA and the CPN provide us with a space and tools through which to accomplish that.”
CFUV is doing their part to support economic recovery in the community during COVID-19. ReStart is a free CFUV initiative designed to support local non-profit organizations. CFUV offers no-cost advertising on its radio and podcast platforms.
Organizations looking to get your message out during COVID-19 can take advantage of ReStart. If your organization would like to advertise with CFUV through the ReStart Initiative, please visit: www.cfuvfriends.ca/restart.
