ICA is currently accepting applications for the 2020 Diversity Scholarship, which recognizes the potential of students to cultivate diversity in the Capital Region.
The Greater Victoria area is growing and now reflects a variety of ethnicities, customs, languages, beliefs, abilities, values, and talents. According to the 2016 census, 18.3% of Victoria’s residents are immigrants born outside of Canada. Nearly nine per cent of Victoria residents are members of a visible minority ethno-cultural group.
“ICA seeks to support the education of culturally sensitive community leaders,” says Jean McRae, ICA Chief Executive Officer. “Our scholarship program is an investment in the cultural capital of Greater Victoria.”
This year, ICA will award three scholarships: $1,000 for high school graduate student, $2,500 for undergraduate and graduate students respectively. For students attending colleges and universities in the Capital Region, the eligibility is as follows:
•High school graduate: accepted into a diploma or degree program at colleges and universities
•Undergraduate: currently registered in a degree program
•Graduate: currently registered or accepted into a post-graduate program
Applicants must submit the following documents:
1. Application letter (not exceeding 1,000 words) describing how the applicant’s academic program of study will prepare the applicant for a career dedicated to promoting cultural awareness, understanding, and advocating for the human rights of people of all cultures −the applicant’s familiarity with ICA and its mission
3. Final confirmation of acceptance or registration in a college or university degree program (If a preliminary confirmation is submitted first to meet the deadline, the final document will be requested before receiving the award.)
4. Record of most recent academic achievement (such as transcripts)
5. Record of volunteer or professional involvement in multicultural affairs or diversity education, training, or community activities (when available)
6. Two letters of reference

Applications will be reviewed by the ICA Board of Directors. Successful applicants will be notified of their award by Friday, August 28, 2020. Successful applicants agree to be featured in Tapestry, ICA’s email newsletter and to be present at ICA’s Annual General Meeting on September 16, 2020 at 6:00pm, to receive their award.
