Dear Friend of ICA:
As we witness the strength of a global response to police brutality in the US, Canada and around the world, I am heartened to see the Greater Victoria community coming together to standup against racism and say collectively that Black Lives Matter.
Since ICA’s inception in 1971, when communities of immigrants came together to fight racism, ICA has remained steadfastly committed to equity and justice for all racialized communities. ICA stands in solidarity with the Black community in Greater Victoria and throughout Canada.
In recent weeks racially motivated attacks have targeted the Asian community, systemic injustices continue to severely impact the Indigenous community, and the Black community is once again in crisis as the result of long-standing injustice in the legal system.
ICA recognizes that the legacy of systemic racism has directly impacted and oppressed racialized communities for far too long. We can and must do better.
We understand many people have been working tirelessly on this issue and ICA stands with them now more than ever before. In the coming weeks and months, you will be seeing more from ICA in the form of blog posts, resources and community events. Please join us as we work to combat racism and create a safe and welcoming community for all.
Thank you for your commitment to Greater Victoria’s newcomer immigrants and refugees. I look forward to working with you to create an inclusive community.
