Clarissa Cecillia “Issa” Mijares

I’m More Than The Immigrant You Had In Mind is a powerful project that highlights the diverse and multifaceted identities of immigrants in Canada. The project aims to challenge the stereotypes often associated with newcomers, offering a richer and more nuanced view of their lives, passions, and contributions. Join us as we share the personal stories of immigrants from all walks of life, shedding light on their hopes, dreams, and pursuit of belonging in their new home.

In as much as perseverance is important, there’s also the need to be adaptive… We can go through life trudging along, but we can also choose to enjoy it and dance through it. So, in Filipino Tagalog, that could translate to, not be afraid to sayaw sa saliw ng buhay… to dance with whatever life brings.

In this heartfelt interview, Issa Mijares shares her journey of transitioning to life in Canada, moving from Manila to Victoria in the midst of the pandemic. She reflects on the challenges of rebuilding his professional and personal identity in a new country and the obstacles faced despite her qualifications. Issa talks about the importance of perseverance and adapting to new situations, drawing inspiration from her dance teacher, Ms. Felicitas Radaic, who taught her that perseverance trumps talent.

A key theme of the conversation is Issa’s connection to the Filipino Canadian community, especially her role in inspiring youth to embrace and celebrate their Filipino heritage. Issa encourages the younger generation to be proud of their identity and to dance through life’s challenges with courage and joy— “Sayaw sa saliw ng buhay” (dance with the rhythm of life).

Tune in for a deep and motivational discussion on overcoming adversity, rediscovering yourself, and staying true to your roots.
