Dani Cárdenas

I’m More Than The Immigrant You Had In Mind is a powerful project that highlights the diverse and multifaceted identities of immigrants in Canada. The project aims to challenge the stereotypes often associated with newcomers, offering a richer and more nuanced view of their lives, passions, and contributions. Join us as we share the personal stories of immigrants from all walks of life, shedding light on their hopes, dreams, and pursuit of belonging in their new home.

This is my invitation to everyone. Unlearn, relearn, and welcome as many new people as you have. When our friend group looks very like us… something’s missing. So… talk to newcomers. Talk to different perspectives. Eat different food. You might like it. You might not like it… at least you gave yourself the chance to experience diversity.

In this enlightening interview, Dani Cárdenas, originally from Colombia, shares her personal journey of navigating life in Canada over the past two years. From her arrival as a temporary foreign worker in Halifax to her current life in Victoria, Dani opens up about the challenges of belonging and the complex relationship between immigration, identity, and the duality of being a foreign worker in a new country.

She highlights her journey toward feeling at home in Canada, from her struggles to find her place to the joy of meeting her Canadian partner and building a life together. She reflects on how her multicultural perspective and Latin American heritage have enriched her experience, adding a “little spicy flavor” to her contributions in the workplace and society.

Her message is clear: true inclusion and diversity come from unlearning, relearning, and embracing the differences that newcomers bring. Dani encourages Canadians to welcome diverse perspectives, try new experiences, and be mindful of the immigrant journey in order to build a more inclusive, vibrant society. Tune in for a conversation that celebrates the power of diversity and belonging in shaping our communities.
