Liz Li

I’m More Than The Immigrant You Had In Mind is a powerful project that highlights the diverse and multifaceted identities of immigrants in Canada. The project aims to challenge the stereotypes often associated with newcomers, offering a richer and more nuanced view of their lives, passions, and contributions. Join us as we share the personal stories of immigrants from all walks of life, shedding light on their hopes, dreams, and pursuit of belonging in their new home.

At the first stage of my new life in Canada, I wanted to beat that kind of stereotype on purpose. I worked very hard… At that time, I even want to somehow hide my accent… and then eventually I started to embrace my new identity. This kind of identity… this person is just Liz. Not a person from Eastern Asia, not a person who used to be a director, not a newcomer even… I don’t think any label could define me. I’m just Liz.

In this story, we meet Liz Li, a determined mother and accomplished professional who moved from Beijing, China, to Victoria, Canada, in search of a better future for her daughter and to escape the severe pollution in Beijing. Liz reflects on the challenges she faced adjusting to a new language, culture, and career opportunities, all while working to shed stereotypes and embrace her authentic self.

As a journalist, former television director, and co-author, Liz’s journey is one of reinvention—transitioning from a successful career in China to teaching and finding new professional opportunities in Canada. She also shares how, through her work with the Inter-Cultural Association (ICA), she found confidence and a sense of belonging in her new home.

Liz’s story is a reminder of the importance of embracing one’s true identity and trusting the journey, no matter how long or difficult it may be. Through her voice, we see that the immigrant experience is a complex tapestry, woven with dreams, challenges, and triumphs.
