This event is a community dialogue focused on the housing challenges faced by immigrants in the Greater Victoria region. This event brought together key community partners and solution-makers to share real stories, explore solutions, and collaborate on building a collective immigrant housing plan.

The stories included here represent the cumulative experiences of immigrants arriving on Vancouver Island, as recounted by their settlement workers and other community support workers. All personal details have been altered to maintain privacy and confidentiality. While none of these stories correspond exactly to any one individual’s story, these are the voices of real immigrants recounting actual experiences.

The event Hope for Home: Building an Immigrant Housing Action Plan Together was a response to the growing need for inclusive, sustainable, and culturally appropriate housing solutions for immigrants, refugees, and displaced populations on Vancouver Island. This need has been amplified by the region’s increasing housing crisis, which affects both newcomers and long-time residents alike.

Video testimonies: the honest truth about renting to refugees
We invite you to listen to the voices of the hosts and landlords of Vancouver Island who shared their experience of hosting and renting to refugees. The stories were collected as a part of the Refugee Readiness Project to share the honest lived experiences of a diverse group of hosts and landlords as they opened their homes to refugees.
The videos were made by GVLIP in collaboration with the Refugee Readiness Team – Vancouver Island.
The RRT-VI was an initiative that commenced in March 2022 and concluded in March 2024. As of March 31, 2024, this project has reached its completion and is no longer active. The materials presented here reflect the efforts and accomplishments of RRT-VI (More info) during its two-year duration. Please note that the services and activities described herein are not ongoing. For current initiatives and support services for refugees and displaced Ukrainians, please refer to the Greater Victoria Local Immigration Partnership (GVLIP) or other relevant local organizations and authorities.
